And get this: While the HDL levels of the statin test subjects didn't improve significantly, the policosanol group increased their HDL (good cholesterol) by 18.4%.

In another study involving 244 post-menopausal women with high cholesterol, researchers first attempted to bring down elevated cholesterol levels through six weeks of diet changes. When this proved unsuccessful, they gave the women 5 mg of policosanol daily for 12 weeks, then 10 mg daily for another 12 weeks.
Researchers found that the supplement was effective in significantly lowering LDL levels (25.2%) and total cholesterol (16.7%). In addition, the women experienced a 29.3% increase in HDL levels.
