ELEVENTH ORDER OF BUSINESS - INVENTORY LIST OF STORAGE TANKS!

INVENTORY LIST OF ALL UNDERGROUND STORAGE TANKS!

As we have all recently witnessed pursuant to the catastrophe of the toxic waste spill that polluted much of southwest West Virginia endangering hundreds-of-thousands of Mountaineers by poisoning their drinking water – the WV State Department of Environmental Protection Agency (DEP) seems to be anything BUT ‘a protection agency’!  What this man-made disaster showed was that the State-DEP does not have requirements TO PREVENT DISASTERS – only regulations, fines & penalties AFTER THE FACT when a disaster occurs!  You would think that someone with some Common Sense would have tried to PREVENT POTENTIAL DISASTERS instead of placing the blame after a tragedy occursbut that doesn’t seem to be the case anywhere within the State, including here in Pocahontas County!

Right now, as you read this, within just a few steps from the banks of Deer Creek just above-stream from Moore’s Ready Mix Cement on Route 66 towards Snowshoe/Silver Creek – buried in the ground are SIX LEAKING TANKS obtained from the former Texaco gas station in Marlinton by Jacob Meck, owner of Alleghany Disposal, LLC, who knowingly obtained these leaking tanks since the State-DEP ordered the Texaco station to replace them since they were leaking gasoline & diesel fuel on the banks of the Greenbrier River next to Burns Trucking Co. in Marlinton.  Meck – always pretending to be a ‘good-neighbor’ – buried them just a few feet from the bank of Deer Creek and filled them full of raw-human-septic-sewage-waste – close to 60,000 gallons worth – knowing they were leaking tanks!  When the State-DEP was notified, they indicated that no regulations exist TO PREVENT LEAKING STORAGE TANKS – they can be ‘self-inspected’ as done by Meck & the corporation responsible for the disaster in the Charleston area – and that regulations only exist when the tanks cause pollution as what happened in southwest West Virginia!  And these ‘IDIOTA’ receive taxpayers’ money for their salaries under the name of being a so-called ‘protection agency’!  And then we wonder why ‘West Virginia’ – and everyone in it – is the butt-end of ‘in-bred-jokes’ by late night talk show hosts and stand-up comics – remember the ‘punch-lines’ that in WV everything is ‘relative’!

The real truth of the matter is that very few, if anyone, can point to an inventory list of storage tanks here in Pocahontas County, whether above-ground or underground tanks; and without such a list, it would be nigh-impossible to take PREVENTIVE STEPS BEFORE A DISASTER OCCURRED!  Thus an inquiry & inventory is necessary to LIST all storage tanks, especially UNDERGROUND TANKS, to test for their structural integrity, location, and removal away from all natural springs, streams, ponds, tributary & river banks, and out of flood plains accordingly.  Our collective health & safety is too important than risking toxins into our common environment – especially if bottling pure, clean water is to become the #1 business in Pocahontas County for everyone who has natural spring water on their property and wishes TO SHARE THE WEALTH in a pure water CO-OP!

Knowing that it’s the Duty of the County Commission to protect the health & safety of all Citizens, only NORMAN LEE ALDERMAN (Rep-SD) and PATTI HEINEMANN (Dem-ND), as candidates for the county commission, have stepped forward and identified this problem and offered a solution for the benefit of all concerned.  This is an item that can easily fall within a ‘Public Works Project’ and employee folks at a ‘Living Wage’ of no less than $15 per/hour to clean up Pocahontas County!  This would also include the location & removal of the unlawfully buried ‘Transformers’ containing the carcinogenic ‘PCB’ still buried at the former Howes Leather property in Frank.

Statistics show that there is an over-abundance of heretofore ‘unexplained-cancers’ within this county and it can only mean that toxic-poisons have leaked from underground storage tanks – and from above-ground ‘open-storage-pits’ as once located at Howes Leather!  And according to the Federal-DEP, the most common and harmful toxins in areas away from chemical plants & such are from ‘fecal-matter’ in drinking water that causes ‘E-Coli’, a deadly infectious disease!  That’s why the DEP eventually forced the late Dolan Irvine – with threats of massive fines & imprisonment – if he didn’t remove his pigs away from a tributary stream next to Knapps Creek, since Knapps Creek supplied the drinking water to Marlinton!

It’s time the status-quo in this county took stock of itself and realized that we cannot continue to do business as usual in which only a few prosper at the expense of  everyone else – the county has been slowly dying economically since the Middleclass has all but been wiped-out with low-paying jobs and such!  And living with the threat of toxic-spills – fecal matter in the water – LEAKING STORAGE TANKS – and other potential dangerous situations is not going to attract any quality-of-life to this county – UNLESS WE MAKE A CHANGE FOR THE BETTER…that’s why…

THIS TIME…there’s no excuse…
 IT’S YOUR CHOICE…
TO CHANGE FOR THE BETTER!
